Durham Real Estate and Homes for Sale

As a real estate agent who specializes in Durham, let me be your guide to what Durham Ontario has to offer as a neighbourhood to finding homes for sale in the area.

Neighbourhoods – Durham, Ontario

Originally founded in the 1840’s by a Scottish traveler, the town of Durham was settled along the Saugeen River and is a municipality of West Grey in southwest Ontario. The town is located 18 kilometres (11 miles) east of Hanover, 89 kilometres (55 miles) north of Guelph, and 44 kilometres (27 miles) to the south of Owen Sound. With a population of around 2,500 residents, the town of Durham is a pleasant alternative to the big cities that are located nearby in Grey County.

Durham is recognized as one of Canada’s first self-sustaining towns and is surrounded by a number of smaller, rural communities including Aberdeen, Allan Park, Dornoch, Holstein, Priceville, and Varney. Surprisingly, for its size, the town has a well-established business district that has weathered the ups and downs of the economy. It features a wide range of services and stores that includes a number of popular franchises, a variety of restaurants offering different cuisines, and several specialty retail shops.

With sports being so popular with local residents and the surrounding communities, Durham has a sizeable arena that seats approximately 3,000 hockey and ice skating fans, but baseball and soccer are also very popular. There is a 29-bed hospital that provides 24-hour emergency access, a public library, and two (1 public, 1 separate) elementary schools. You will find secondary schools in nearby Flesherton and Hanover. However, Durham’s charm is primarily attributed to its historic homes, natural beauty, and tree-lined streets.

Artists, craftsmen, and writers call the town home thanks to its thriving art community and its many art festivals. Additionally, the Durham Conservation area attracts many outdoor enthusiasts because it is an ideal spot for camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking trails, kayaking, and picnicking. Needless to say, the combination of Durham’s features and the town’s proximity to larger cities provides the homeowner with that “best of both worlds” lifestyle they have been searching for.
